Abstract. One of the major battles of antiquity - the battle of Kadesh - took place about 1274 B.C. The army of the Hittite tsar Muwatalli II confronted the forces of the Pharaoh Ramesses II. This event was represented in full detail in relief compositions on the walls of the Egyptian temples. Both sides proclaimed themselves to be the winners. So what actually happened on the battlefield, and what are the results of the battle? The article presents the graphical, written and archeological sources allowing the assessment of the results of the battle of Kadesh and also introduces the explanation of the reasons that impelled the Egyptians and the Hittites to proclaim themselves the winners.
