CULTURAL-HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF MODERN ICON-PAINTING OF TOWNS OF THE UPPER VOLGA REGION OF RUSSIA

Abstract. In the article the cultural centers of the Upper Volga region significant in the history of iconographic art development are fullestly described, including little-studied towns, such as Rostov and Shuya. The quantitative composition of icon-painting workshops in the modern towns of the Upper Volga region, at the heart of which local icon-painting traditions lie, is analyzed. The author concluded about the significant cultural potential of the region, the deep historical memory of the people inhabiting the territory of the Upper Volga, who are able to keep the ancient traditions of iconography and revive them in the places of former icon-painting centres.
