Abstract. The specific nature of a new type of philosophism introduced by R. Descartes is revealed in the article; consciousness in his philosophism is established as privileged entity being a criterion and measure for all the things in existence. Through R. Descartes’ living circumstances it is shown how the construction of the philosopher’s thought happened in its existential dimension, original and unique expression. The key determinants and foundations of his philosophy are analyzed.
