Abstract. In the article the socio-cultural image of the chief uyezd town of the XIX th century, in which formation the key role was played by the merchants, is considered. Carrying out the empirical approach to the research of Murom merchant class, the author comes to the conclusion about the importance of this estate in the unique system of values that includes entrepreneurship and charity, which had impact on the culture of Russia as a whole.
