Abstract. The article considers the causes and forms of Saratov and Astrakhan provinces peasantry’s resistance to military duty performance on the basis of archival materials. The authors show the dependence of peasants’ desire to perform military service on their socio-economic status and ethno-confessional belonging, and also on the effectiveness of the domestic and foreign policy of the Russian government. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of peasant community’s attitude to recruits, retired soldiers and non-commissioned officers.
