Abstract. The article reveals the historical and theoretical-legal bases of mediation as a quite wide and multi-aspect category. The purpose of the article is the analysis of mediation development study in its historical perspective starting from the ancient world and ending with modernity, thus historical tendencies are revealed, which are still topical in modern theory and practice of mediation. The idea that this knowledge will help us realize and present today’s theoretical model of mediation through the reconsideration of the past is substantiated.
