LAUGHTER AND CHAOS: ON ROLE OF JESTERS IN COURT CULTURE OF PETER’S EPOCH

Abstract. The article suggests explanation of the increased role of laughter and buffoonery in the court culture of Peter I epoch. The unconscious compensatory function of laughter for Peter’s psyche as a reformer and traditional values offender is emphasized. The connection of laughter and early processes of the Russian modernization is traced, and also the correlation of the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of jesters’ laughter with the general level of society civilization is mentioned.
