RITUALS AND BELIEFS OF THE KARACHAIS RELATED TO CHILDBIRTH (THE END OF THE XIX - THE BEGINNING OF THE XX CENTURY)

Abstract. The article considers the system of customs and rituals related to childbirth. Particular attention is paid to religious and magical practices. The author concludes that the Karachais percieved a child as an equal member of their society immediately after the birth. They understood that children were not only biological beings, but also social ones in the stage of formation. A child was considered as a definite personality, and his/her role was conditioned by the nature of family and the social structure of the people.
