CANVAS BY HORACE VERNET "THE CAPTURE OF THE SMAHLA OF ABD-EL-KADER" AS PICTORIAL DOCUMENT OF THE FRENCH CONQUEST OF ALGERIA

Abstract. The article examines one of the aspects of the creative work of the French painter of the XIX century Horace Vernet (1789-1863). The canvas "The Capture of the Smahla of Abd-El-Kader" devoted to an episode of the French conquest of Algeria is one of the most significant works of the painter. On the basis of the analysis of archival sources and memoirs the author examines the problem of the actuality of the canvas, proves that the painter by means of true historical details creates the illusion of reliability but distorts historical truth in order to please the political propaganda of Louis Philippe d'Orl?ans. The article describes how by artistic means Horace Vernet was able to combine two conflicting historical approaches and create the expressive artwork.
