Abstract. The article is devoted to the problem of national musical folkloristics formation as an independent science at the end of the XIX - the beginning of the XX century. The author for the first time considers the issues of collecting and studying folk songs through the lenses of Moscow ethnographers and musicians’ joint work, presents the overview of the main directions of the activity of the Musical-Ethnographic Commission - the largest scientific organization of that time, and shows its fundamental role in the formation of modern research methods.
