Abstract. The article reveals the meaning of the conception of happiness or bliss in the ethical doctrines of Democritus and Epicurus. As it is known, both philosophers developed the atomistic theory of the origin and structure of the Universe, and differences in its construction had inevitably manifested themselves in the ethical views of the thinkers. The paper identifies and describes certain peculiarities of interpreting the ethical category of happiness in the philosophy of Democritus and Epicurus and reveals their interrelation with the general conception of the philosophers about the cosmic world order.
