Abstract. The article presents the life and work of outstanding poet Po Chu-I. Historical and cultural processes that took place in China in the VIII th-IX th centuries are studied, the expression means of the Chinese poetry are analyzed, and the way of life of the Chinese intellectuals is described. It is concluded that Po Chu-I expressed the main trends of the Tang dynasty in his work and made classical elitist poetry much closer to the tastes and needs of society.
