Abstract. The author presents her own approach to the construction of the course "Sociology", discusses this discipline possibility for creating general cultural and professional competencies of the bachelors of engineering specialities, in connection with the basic functions of sociology determines the place and tasks of the educational course, reveals three features of sociology by contrasting sociological and technocratic approaches, and substantiates the goal of creating "sociological imagination" that is important in the student’s personal and professional development.
