Abstract. The author considers the historical connection of spiritual and secular education that began in the XVIII th century, mentions that Penza Seminary left a legacy of the teaching block built at the end of the XIX th century to Penza State University, describes the construction of this historic building of PSU, undertakes an attempt to analyze the reasons of the most serious problem of the end of the XIX th – the beginning of the XX th century – the outflow of seminarians from the clergy, and by the material of "Penza Diocesan News" of the 1890-1900s studies the practice of Penza seminarians’ entering secular higher education establishments in the XIX th century.
