Abstract. The author describes the main approaches to the study of the reasons of World War I (1914-1918), substantiates the necessity of expanding the field of thee war origin research by referring to geopolitical paradigm, which gives the idea of ??the transformation of colonial empires into the national states during that period, and mentions that the aims of powers in the war were determined to a greater extent by the values ??of aggressive nationalism, than by the desire for colonial expansion.
