Abstract. The author discusses the study of nationalism from the perspective of the philosophical theory of modernism, where ethnicity plays a certain role in nationalism origin, and culture becomes important at the final stage of the nation formation, but the real roots of this phenomenon are in policy and economy. This approach is presented in the works of E. Gellner, E. Smith, and B. Andersen.
