SCHUMANN’S TRADITIONS IN PIANO VARIATIONS OF THE RUSSIAN COMPOSERS OF THE SECOND HALF OF THE XIX TH CENTURY

Moscow State Conservatory named after P. I. Chaikovskii
Abstract. The conception of variation cycle, proposed by Schumann in the 30s of the XIX th century, had a considerable impact on the Russian composers’ piano variations of the second half of the century, in particular on the works of A. G. Rubinshtein (Theme and Variations, Op. 88) and P. I. Chaikovskii (Theme and Variations, Op. 19, № 6). Previously, this problem with respect to variations has not been specifically studied. Schumann’s principles, which are expressed in the significant figurative transformation of theme and intensive intonational development on the basis of short motif reorganization, became a powerful impulse to the development of piano variations genre in Russia.
