Abstract. The author discusses the modern phenomenon of culture – virtual museums, which are products of computer industry, considers one of the social-cultural functions of virtual museums – the function of preserving the "modernity", mentions that virtual museums have significant potential for the preservation of cultural heritage objects, created at the present day, pays particular attention to the preservation of artistic achievements of these days, and by specific examples shows the possibilities of virtual museums in the preservation of different types of contemporary art.
