Abstract. The question of Professor I. N. Smirnov’s participation in "Multan process" (1892-1896) continues to be controversial. I. N. Smirnov, who gave an ethnographic examination on the part of prosecution, was represented as a chauvinist and falsifier in most publications on this case. The authors of the article trace the changes in the estimations of the scientist’s role in this process, and formulate their views on his position, explaining it by the features of inter-ethnic relations in imperial Russia, the state of science and evolutionary wrong beliefs.
