Abstract. The author analyzes the questions of the compositional construction of classical architectural ensembles in fortress towns, believes that prospective regular plans included the formation of the compositional-semantic core of a town center, which was a multi-functional square or a system of squares, and reveals the regular occurrence of the large-scale stone temple in the square that served as a dominant architectural and town planning ensemble of the central square and town in whole.
