Abstract. The author analyzes the recent amendments in the criminal procedure legislation of the Russian Federation in relation to the implementation of departmental procedural supervision over preliminary investigation, reveals the content of the investigator’s procedural independence, pays special attention to the correlation of the procedural powers of the investigation agency head and the investigator in the course of preliminary investigation and supervision over investigation, and suggests appropriate amendments to the existing criminal procedure legislation.
