Abstract. The authors consider the main approaches to the formation and evaluation of the institution of the public promise of award in the European continental civil law, and come to the conclusion that despite the reception of the Roman private law the institution of the public promise of award initially received no consolidation in the European continental civil law, and such consolidation was possible only under the influence of developing social relations.
