Abstract. The author researches the origin and evolution of the ideas about evil in the Vedic religious-philosophical tradition; reveals the specificity of understanding the basic moral categories of good and evil in the Indian scriptures - Vedas and Upanishads; and demonstrates the process of more profound content formation in the notion of evil as the movement from its specific empirical manifestations to the research of abstract essence.
