Abstract. The author discusses the question about the status of the category "extremism", and the competence of its use as an objective scientific term, considers the main viewpoints on this question, which one can discover in the Russian and foreign academic literature, substantiates the formulation of the problem of extremism social and ontological foundations by the example of post art nouveau modern society, and for this purpose conducts the analysis of the philosophical interpretations of extremeness and extremism phenomena belonging to the German scientist U. Backes and the French philosopher J. Baudrillard.
