Abstract. The author describes the history of Valaam Monastery, reveals the reasons and features of the cloister brethren rebellion in the 40s of the XIX th century with the result of the church hierarchy investigation on this case, basing on archival sources considers the canonical, doctrinal and moral reasons of Valaam Monastery Father Superior Veniamin displacement from the prior position, presents the subsequent investigation of secular and church authorities that shows the depth of the monastery crisis, the falsity of most accusations and the groundlessness of witnesses, and concludes that the research will allow refraining from such unfounded accusations in future.
