Abstract. The author reveals the cultural-historical context of utopia genesis. The Renaissance brought radical changes to culture values system. The man finds new ways to improve the world, where utopia acts as a social alchemy. In the process of the research the author singles out the basic characteristics of utopia phenomenon, and comes to the conclusion that social-cultural approach, which allows revealing the laws of utopia origin, is necessary for the integral assessment of utopia phenomenon.
