Abstract. The author analyzes the main stages in the development of social assistance in pre-revolutionary Russia, considers the social assistance of the ancient Slavs, the phenomenon of the assistance to the poor and also the development of the state charity and charitable activity, and comes to the conclusion that by the end of the XIX th century Russia had much experience of assistance for those in need, which later became the basis for the formation of a social worker profession.
