Abstract. The article analyzes the content of the notion "socialist realism", which has been disputable for many decades. The author offers to refuse the attempts to determine this phenomenon as style or method and consider it as art united only by general idea content. The task of socialist-realistic art was the realistic representation of Marxist theory content with the purpose of its propaganda as the most adequate social doctrine and the implementation of its postulates in reality, only in this aspect such art can and must be considered as "realistic".
