Abstract. The article considers the place of the notion "globalization" in the system of the terms that define it. The author substantiates the distinction of globalization from modernization: if the former is a mostly objective process, modernization has subjective nature. Two main forms of contemporary modernization – westernization and acculturation – are revealed. Contemporary modernization does not guarantee the resolution of the contradictions of globalization, engenders the fear of the future ("future-shock" on the basis of "culture-shock"). The author shares the view of modernity self-negation in postmodernity.
