Abstract. The article reveals the views of Russian thinker and Slavophil F. I. Tyutchev on the essential features of the Catholic Church. It is emphasized that Tyutchev’s attitude to traditional Catholicism was very critical, he considered it as the secularization of Christianity, the conversion of Church into a religious state headed by the emperor, who concentrated in himself the fullness of secular and religious authority. At the same time, the poet recognized that Catholicism remained the center of Christianity in the West.
