NOVO-OGAREVO PROJECT – WAS THERE A CHANCE TO SAVE THE SOVIET UNION?

Abstract. The article describes processes that led to the collapse of the Soviet Union, shows the multidimensionality and contradictoriness of factors that contributed to it, reveals internal political struggle between opposing factions in the higher echelons of the USSR leadership. The author pays special attention to the consideration of different approaches to solving the crisis of the state system and attempts to save the unity of the USSR known as "Novo-Ogarevo process". The reasons of the failure of all the undertaken efforts in this direction are given.
