TRADITIONS OF RUSSIAN HISTORICAL PAINTING OF THE XIX TH CENTURY IN M. Z. CHAGALL’S CREATIVE WORKS

Abstract. The article presents the analysis of historical problematic in the creative works of Belarusian, Russian and French artist M. Z. Chagall, the author, for the first time in scientific literature, comes to the conclusion about his special "epic" understanding of history, which source is the Russian historical painting. The result of the research is the conclusion that during the late "European" period of the master’s creative works the tasks of the Russian national art are embodied, which were set by historical painting in the middle of the XIX th century.
