Abstract. The author covers a little-studied problem related to the interpretation of Stalin’s "theory" of linguistics by soviet musicologists. After Stalin’s publication "Marxism and Problems of Linguistics" in the newspaper "Pravda" on June 20, 1950, comments on the "supreme" document occupied an important place in musicology practice. From that time the substantiation of socialist realism canons was conducted in terms of the historical evolution of musical language, as well as finding the similarity of this evolution in the language of other arts. Stalin’s work allowed giving "scientific" arguments for the historical conditionality of social realism and the concept about the "anti-revolutionary" nature of art language development. Thus theoretical foundation was finally provided for the canons of national spirit, academism, and ideological content, supposedly inherent in the style of soviet music.
