Abstract. The author analyzes transformation processes within the former USSR by the example of the August conflict between Russia and Georgia, shows that while studying the results and consequences of the events of August 2008 it becomes apparent that the conflict is not over and the situation remains tense and unpredictable, and substantiates the need to search for the new principles of the relations between the states within the former USSR taking into account the contemporary realia of the world politics.
