ORENBURG COSSACKS AND DEFENSE OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE SOUTH-EASTERN BORDERS IN THE FIRST THIRD OF THE XIXTH CENTURY

Abstract. In the middle of the ХVIIIth century Orenburg Cossack army was formed in the South-East of the Russian Empire. During the period of its existence the army was repeatedly reformed, and as the result acquired strong military organization. The author considers the ambiguous contribution of the army to the problem solution of strengthening the Russian state in the South-Eastern outskirts of the empire in the first third of the ХIХth century.
