SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH ACTIVITY OF OFFICIALS FROM MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE IN CHINA AT THE END OF THE XIXTH - THE BEGINNING OF THE XXTH CENTURY

Abstract. The author tells that the comprehensive scientific research of China began in Russia at the end of the XIXth century, and conducts the analysis of archival materials on Russian diplomats' scientific activity. Working in various Chinese cities in their spare time they conducted ethnographic researches, studied Chinese history, culture, philosophy and religion, translated Chinese texts, participated in archaeological excavations, and collected works of Chinese art. In addition, they assisted Russian and foreign scientists, who visited China.
