Abstract. The author considers the notion of essence and the dialectical principle of contradiction that is fundamental to Hegel's system, shows that essence defined by Hegel in the form of negativity correlated with itself is revealed in its reflective definitions both as identical and distinct from itself, and substantiates that this correlation of negativity forms the fundamental structure of contradiction, which is the fundamental principle of the origin and development of all things in existence in Hegelian philosophy.
