Abstract. The author discusses different approaches to the notion of unemployment and the reasons of its origin, shows the negative and positive consequences of unemployment, evaluates its role in market system functioning, considers the question of unemployment acceptable level, presents evaluation criteria, gives its substantiation and notion, and concludes that when analyzing the situation of unemployment in any region one should evaluate not only its absolute value but its tendency to change.
