Abstract. The author discusses the problem of artistic image and figurative system development in the portraiture of Chuvashia, determines the specificity and uniqueness of portraiture figurative language, considers the major stylistic directions, the particularities of portrait types formation at different historical stages, pays particular attention to the problem of national, and substantiates that the topic is urgent as it is little studied in the art criticism of the republic.
