CATHOLIC MODERNISM: PART OF WESTERN ART NOUVEAU OR SPECIAL REACTION TO IT?

Abstract. The author reveals the notion Catholic modernism, tells that it turned into an influential liberal movement at the end of the XIXth - the beginning of the XXth century, considers the theological and social-cultural roots of this phenomenon; suggests the typology of its basic directions and the logically coherent description of the most important philosophical-theological conceptions of its most striking main representatives, analyzes the polemics around modernist ideas in connection with Vatican sharply critical reaction to them, and finally reveals the profound influence, which, in spite of papal bans, modernist ideas had on the further development of the Catholic theology during the XXth century, including the reforms of II Vatican Council. The main purpose of the article is to show that being the result of the Western art nouveau and the bearer of reformist ideas, Catholic modernism however suggested certain alternative designed to preserve special Catholic identity and to provide an adequate status for Church in a rapidly changing Western society.
