CULTURAL-ENLIGHTENING INITIATIVES OF KURSK INTELLIGENTSIA AT THE END OF THE XIXTH - THE BEGINNING OF THE XXTH CENTURY (BY EXAMPLE OF KURSK PUSHKIN PUBLIC LIBRARY)

Abstract. The period from the end of the XIXth till the beginning of the XXth century in the Russian Empire was characterized by the intensive development of public organizations involved in cultural-enlightening activity. One of the most common and widespread methods of knowledge translation into the democratic strata of urban population was public and national libraries opening. Pushkin Public Library was opened in Kursk at the end of the XIXth century, and its aim was reading spread among the wide sections of urban population. By the example of the statistical data, contained in the report documentation of the library, the authors reconstruct its activity, characterize the changes in visiting the library by readers, describe the sex-age and social composition of the readers, and reveal the main problems in the library functioning.
