Abstract. The authors present the analysis of the family and marriage relations system formed in Russia during the period between the XX^th - the beginning of the XXI^st century, study the process of the historical transformation of family as a social institution in social-historical aspect: peasant family, then family - social unit - modern democratic family, and pay special attention to the factors that conditioned the change of priorities in family and marriage relations by the example of the Tatar family.
