Abstract. The author discusses abatis lines construction within Mordvinian region in the XVIIth century - Atemaro-Saransk and Insaro-Potizhsk, which became an important part in the system of the Russian state south-eastern borders fortifications, as well as service people's numerical strength and ethnic composition at the fortifications, mentions that this problem is little-studied and requires further research, summarizes new material on the topic under consideration, and introduces archival data into scientific circulation.
