Abstract. The author discusses the methodological and theoretical status of idea in its relation to notion and their joint application in scientific research practice. Idea as a form of thought, its meaning and properties are considered in different ways in the history of philosophy. Currently, two meanings of the term are invariable: phenomena universal connection and concrete event essence. Connecting with notion, idea allows stating and solving scientific problems and formulating a new notion about the subject. Notion development is implemented with the participation of pre-notional forms of thinking, such as idea.
