U.S. FOREIGN POLICY INFLUENCE ON DEMOCRACY FORMATION PROCESS IN CHILE IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE XXTH CENTURY

Abstract. The author considers Chile and the United States relations in the context of Chilean democracy formation, pays special attention to the US participation in the military coup in Chile in 1973, which resulted in the overthrow of the democratically elected President Salvador Allende and the beginning of the authoritarian regime led by Augusto Pinochet; estimates the U.S. efforts in the erosion of democracy and human rights in Chile and analyzes the unique nature of Chilean democratic transit.
