Abstract. The authors show that the problems of the USSR forest industry development during the 1970s - the beginning of the 1980s are closely connected with the general problems of the soviet society and state development during that time. The following problems of the industry branch studied in the historical aspect are singled out: the non-efficiency of managing the branch, the weakness of the practical realization of scientific and technological achievements, transport infrastructure underdevelopment and so on.
