Abstract. The article reveals the features of the interrelations of consuls and sailors of merchant ships of the Russian Empire (the second half of the XIX^th - the beginning of the XX^th centuries). The author pays special attention to the public-legal functions of a captain which concerned the activity of the Russian consul as well.
