Abstract. In the article the author undertakes the attempt to study the lowest level of management in Russian Orthodox Church during synodal period - the rural dean institution. By the example of archive documents and published sources the thorough analysis of a rural dean's activity is presented. The range of common positions of historiography is challenged.
