ETHNICAL FACTOR INFLUENCE ON WELSHMEN'S CULTURAL AND LANGUAGE IDENTITYIN MODERN ENGLISH JOKES AND ANECDOTES

Abstract. The article tackles the ethno-cultural stereotype of a Welshman in English consciousness by the material of (half-folklore) ethnic songs, verses, jokes and anecdotes providing the insight into the mechanisms of creating the ethnic stereotypes of Welshmen. Having preserved in itself the basic images of a Welshman as a man of nature which were formed in earlier epochs the modern stereotype interprets them differently under the influence of the political and ethno-cultural situation which has formed in modern times. In other words the nucleus of the cognitive component of a Welshman stereotype in the modern picture of the world preserves the traditional features of this image, and the emotional component which includes the estimating characteristics of these features is subjected to cultural, language and political changes.
