Abstract. In the article the employment structure is revealed and the specificity of commercial activity of Great Russians, Little Russians, Germans, Tatars, Mordvins, Jews, Chuvashes and the other people of Saratov province is characterized on the basis of the data of the first general population census in the Russian Empire in 1897.
